That means it is finally <a href=\"http:\/\/usapple.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apple season<\/a>. The best way to celebrate the season? <a href=\"http:\/\/pickyourown.org\/applepicking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple picking<\/a> with your family, of course! You can enjoy the weather before it gets too cold, learn a few fun apple facts, and then get your kids into the kitchen to make some delicious apple recipes.<\/div>\n<h2>Before You Go\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Here are some <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.illinois.edu\/apples\/facts.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fun apple facts<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are about 2,500 varieties of apples grown in the United States<\/li>\n<li>Apples are grown in all 50 states<\/li>\n<li>It takes 2 pounds of apples to make one 9-inch pie<\/li>\n<li>It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider<\/li>\n<li>Apples are fat-free, contain no sodium and provide about 5 grams of fiber each<\/li>\n<li>Apple trees take 4 to 5 years to produce their first fruit<\/li>\n<li>As soon as you pick an apple it stops ripening<\/li>\n<li>Here\u2019s why apple slices <a href=\"http:\/\/chemistry.about.com\/od\/chemistryfaqs\/f\/brownapplefaq.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">turn brown and how to prevent it<\/a><\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s a really cool new apple that doesn\u2019t turn brown called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcticapples.com\/arctic-apples-r\/introducing-nonbrowning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arctic\u00ae Apple<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>At the Orchard\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ll enjoy seeing different apple varieties and experiencing what makes each one special: flavor, crispness, sweetness. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.foodnetwork.com\/fn-dish\/2015\/09\/7-apple-varieties-and-the-best-uses-for-each\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Some apples are better for baking<\/a>, some are better for juicing and some are better just sliced up and eaten fresh. And everyone has their favorite \u2013 mine is Pink Lady, my husband prefers Honeycrisp and my kids both love Granny Smith.<\/p>\n<h2>Back at Home\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Now that you have more apples than you know what to do with, here are some ideas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Did you know that some apples should be refrigerated for best quality? Gala and Golden Delicious are two common varieties that should definitely be stored in the refrigerator, but all apples can be stored there to prolong freshness.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s easy to freeze apples for later use in pies and cooked desserts. Simply peel, cut and core the apples, then soak in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aces.edu\/dept\/extcomm\/specialty\/antibrowning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ascorbic acid<\/a> and place on a cookie sheet. Freeze until solid, then place in plastic bags or containers and return to the freezer.<\/li>\n<li>You can also dry apples at home with a <a href=\"http:\/\/nchfp.uga.edu\/publications\/uga\/uga_dry_fruit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dehydrator<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15459 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/caloriecontrol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/theskinnyonlowcal.orgphotodune-6906608-healthy-7745a787d3190cccafe0f7b2569020946553fb71-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"162\">The next thing to do is get your kids into the kitchen to make your own <a href=\"http:\/\/sucralose.org\/deliciously-simple-applesauce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">homemade applesauce<\/a>.
